BORDENTOWN CITY — A new pet food pantry in Bordentown City hopes to help struggling pet owners who may not have enough money to feed themselves, let alone their four-legged friends.
The pet pantry, which had a slow rollout in early spring, is a collaborative effort between St. Mary's Church, Bordentown City Cats and Bordentown Dog Lovers.
It runs alongside the church's existing food pantry and is open to residents from Bordentown City, Bordentown Township, Chesterfield, Fieldsboro and Mansfield.
"When times get tough for a family, often the first thing that has to be sacrificed is a beloved pet and it can be heartbreaking," said Mak Kieffer, a member of Bordentown City Cats, a group dedicated to rescuing and caring for the city's stray and feral cat population. "Seeing how successful St. Mary's has been at providing a vital lifeline to area families, we approached them about working together with the goal of helping to keep families united with their pets while they weather tough times."
Wet and dry cat and dog donations can be dropped off at the following locations:
- Little Friends Pet Grooming, 137 Farnsworth Ave., Bordentown City
- Christ Episcopal Church, 130 Prince St., Bordentown City
- Honor Yoga, 3224 Route 206, Columbus
- 11 E. Church St., Bordentown City (leave on front porch)
During the city's annual Cranberry Festival this weekend, Bordentown City Cats will also be accepting cat food donations. Its booth will be on the 300 block of Farnsworth Avenue near City Hall.
Those in need of pet food assistance must pre-register at the church office, 45 Crosswicks St., Monday through Friday. A valid photo ID and proof of address is required.
