FLORENCE — In an effort to assist in the immediate need of food and supplies for the Florence Animal Shelter, there will be a "Pets, No Politics" event Saturday at Pet Depot.
The event, which organizers are calling a "fix up the shelter campaign," is to increase awareness of the needs of the large number of animals being cared for at the shelter.
Shelter officials said that often more than 400 animals per month come through the shelter, causing a deficiency in essential supplies.
From 10 a.m.- 1 p.m. on Saturday at Pet Depot, the public can donate supplies such as towels, laundry detergent and bleach as well as pet supplies, particularly high-quality dog food.
There will also be free hot dogs and a bake sale on site. Funding is needed for repainting the kennels.
Florence attorney Wilson Mitchell, who participates in the shelter's fostering program, said it is important that the animals have adequate facilities.
"It's imperative for this community to have a well-designed, expandable animal shelter which includes an area for holding horses and other large animals," said Mitchell, who is also the co-founder of Singing River Equine Rescue.
