The theft of thousands of dollars in donated pet food has left a Victoria charity scratching its head as to who could’ve committed such a heartless act.

Dozens of bags of food and other supplies earmarked for homeless people and their pets were stolen from the Victoria Pet Food Bank, with losses estimated at $6,000.

The goods were stolen from a storage shed in Sooke used by the charity sometime over the last week.

“When I opened the door, it was completely empty. I started crying, I was completely shaking and said this is not possible,” said food bank founder Margarita Dominguez. “This is our supplies for the next two months and without this, they’re going to starve because we don’t have food.”

Dominguez said a post on social media showed a bag of dog food emptied in the middle of the road near the Galloping Goose trail.

“To remove all these bags, even from the shelves, they needed time,” she said.

In all, the thief or thieves made off with 50 dog food bags weighing 33 pounds each, 10 bags of cat food, winter coats for pets, toys and treats.

Anyone wanting to donate food to the pet food bank can visit the organization’s website or contact their nearest Salvation Army.

“The need of food is increasing,” said Dominguez. “The people that did this, they are just targeting the ones that have nothing, and that is really very low.”

Anyone with information on the theft is asked to contact Sooke RCMP or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
