Annual holiday pet food drive underway - The Charlottesville Newsplex

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (NEWSPLEX) -- An annual holiday pet food drive is underway through Jan. 1 and aims to bring tons of food to two Central Virginia animal rescue groups, Caring for Creatures and Ring Dog Rescue.

The food is a way to help the organizations operate all year, said the food drive organizer Kim Matsko, owner of Natural Pet Essentials store on Route 29 North.

"It also takes away from the money that they have to spend on food that they can apply to medical care and other things that are required to run an actual rescue operation," she said.

Pet food can be brought to the Natural Pet Essentials store or bought there at a discounted price. Other food drop-off points are Canine Campus on Westfield Road and the Animal Wellness Center in Crozet.

Last year, the pet food drive brought in 6,000 pounds of food. This year, the donations have totaled 4,200 pounds. Matsko hopes to see that number grow before the drive ends on Sunday.
