Just in time for the holiday weekend, C.A.R.E.4Paws and Bree’s Mobile Paw Spa visited PATH Santa Barbara on Thursday, Dec. 22 to offer baths, vaccinations, flea medication, microchips and food for the dogs and one cat staying at the housing facility on 816 Cacique Street. The services were provided as part of C.A.R.E.4Paws’ Companion Pet Assistance program, which helps low-income, senior and disabled pet owners and community members experiencing homelessness.

PATH Santa Barbara, formerly Casa Esperanza Homeless Shelter, addresses homelessness in the community by connecting individuals with the services they need to improve health, increase income and transition into stable housing. Right now, PATH has five four-legged residents, and C.A.R.E.4Paws was asked to come and lend a helping hand for the holidays.

“Our goal is to improve quality of life for pets and their owners and ensure animals can stay with their families for life,” says Carlos Abitia, C.A.R.E.4Paws’ Community Outreach & Youth Program Director and the organization’s cofounder. “As funding allows, we can provide anything from free vaccines, grooming and delivery of pet food to vet assistance and spays/neuters.”

The nonprofits’ Companion Pet Assistance program has grown significantly in 2016 and now includes pet food pickup stations at several local facilities, such as PATH, Rescue Mission and Unity Shoppe. Pet service providers, including Lemos Feed & Pet Supplies, La Cumbre Feed and Camp Canine help bring in supplies by housing donation bins in which supporters can drop off contributions.

Says Giann Franco, Outreach and Safety Navigator at PATH Santa Barbara, “I admire that there are nonprofits such as C.A.R.E4Paws that take a proactive approach to helping animals in need.”

C.A.R.E.4Paws—short for community awareness, responsibility and education—was created with the mission to help put an end to pet overpopulation in Santa Barbara County, and to inspire a greater sense of accountability, compassion and respect for animals in the process.

Mission:

A 501(c)3 nonprofit, C.A.R.E.4Paws serves as an umbrella organization for local shelters and rescues. We support and collaborate closely with these groups-as well as the Humane Society and Santa Barbara County Animal Services- to boost pet retention, increase adoptions, lower the number of unwanted pets born and, ultimately, decrease the amount of adoptable animals found in shelters and euthanized each year.

To make our mission a reality, C.A.R.E.4Paws has implemented several programs that in a short period of time have had a significant impact on the community:

Bilingual & Bicultural Community Outreach

Spay & Neuter Assistance

Companion Pet Assistance

Early Education Outreach

Dog Training Intervention

Adoption Events
