Cheryl Barnes usually takes on a volunteer project between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and this year she decided to do something good for animals.
Barnes said she got to know Meals on Wheels at Mid-City Concerns in downtown and she is really impressed with the work the organization does delivering meals to seniors and disabled people who can’t cook for themselves.
After talking to staff at Meals on Wheels, she realized that many clients have pets, and an increasingly difficult time feeding them.
“This is a personal drive. I go out and pick up the pet food,” Barnes said. “I believe so much in what Meals on Wheels are doing that I wanted to help out a little bit.”
It’s the first time Barnes has done a pet food drive, and she created an event on Facebook, hoping people would find her there.
“I’ve gotten about 10 donations so far,” Barnes said.
Barnes is asking for donations of cat and dog food, dry or canned. Because she’s out and about a lot, it’s easy for her to pick up donations with a little advance notice, she said.
Donated pet food is delivered to clients in any area served by Meals on Wheels.
