Pets abandoned in Puerto Rico now looking for homes in Raleigh - WNCN


RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – A plane full of animals from Puerto Rico landed at RDU Thursday night, putting nearly 100 animals on a path to recovery.

The cats and dogs started traveling from Puerto Rico at 12:30 p.m. Thursday and landed a little after 9 p.m. They’ve been through two very tough weeks and a horrific hurricane. Now, they are all here in the Triangle ready to find some love.

Under the light of the moon, people from animal shelters across the area gathered to greet 70 dogs and 17 cats. Multiple shelters and animal care groups came out to take as many as 40, or as few as four dogs, because to them it’s the right thing to do.

“You know humans in general you should have compassion for all living creatures so any little bit we can help makes a big difference I believe,” said Shelly Peterson with Moore Humane Society.

The Humane Society of the United States has been working for weeks to help rescue as many animals as possible.

“The animals that were already in the shelters, we needed to move them out to make room for the displaced animals. So that’s what we’re doing. We’re going to Puerto Rico, we’re sending in two planes a day with humanitarian supplies and pet supplies, and then flying animals out,” said Kim Alboum with the Humane Society of the United States.

While the dogs are being divided among several organizations, all 17 cats are going to Safe Haven for Cats.

“They made their way from the water, from the wind, from the damage. They’ve got maybe nobody’s been feeding them. Somehow they made their way through and they’re the true survivors,” said Pam Miller, President of Safe Haven for Cats.

It’s probably going to take a couple weeks to get all the animals ready for adoption. Here is a list of other organizations you could adopt an animal from: Humane Society of Charlotte, Pawfect Match Rescue, Saving Grace, and Wake County SPCA.
