A local veterinarian will chow down on a can of dog food to make good on a promise — unless local donors decide to spare him the indignity.

Dr. Bryan Langlois, medical director of the Pet Pantry of Lancaster County, promised to eat a can of dog food if the agency raised more than $50,000 during the Extraordinary Give.

They did, and Langlois was “prepared to make good on his promise,” according to a statement issued Tuesday by the center. However, “supporters began saying they would donate money to spare him of his doggy dinner. Others said they would donate money to make sure he did fulfill his promise.”

So, it’s up to the donors to decide. Pet Pantry is running two simultaneous fundraising campaigns, one of which is for people who want to see him eat kibble and the other for people who want to leave it for Fido.

Whichever page earns the most money by 7 p.m. Friday will determine his dinner.

“This whole thing has kind of gone from a fun little joke to something that has taken on a life of its own, but it has been a lot of fun for us here at the Pantry over the last couple of weeks,” Langlois said in the release. “We felt this was the best way to let the people decide what I should do.”

All funds will go to the Pet Pantry’s operating budget to help local pets and pet owners.
