Just as February's blizzard of dog food recalls fell on TruDog, so does the current April shower with Wednesday's recall of TruDog Boost Me Mighty Meaty Beef Topper Meal Enhancer.
As in February, salmonella was found in a sample of the TruDog treats, this time by the FDA. This ignited the recall of 400 cases with lot No. 20190531 13815. Those with the product should return it to the retailer for a full refund. Anyone with questions can call 1-800-476-8808.
TruDog joins Vital Essentials as brands with varieties recalled in both February and April. The FDA's zero tolerance for salmonella, listeria and E. coli in dog food tends to affect the smaller, raw pet food manufacturers than the larger manufacturers of bagged and pre-cooked canned foods (notwithstanding the recent Gravy Train and Milo's Kitchen recalls).
Pets with salmonella can be lethargic, suffer from vomiting, bloody diarrhea and fever. In rare cases, salmonella can be fatal. But pets can also pass salmonella on to other pets as well as humans who handle contaminated food or touch food surfaces that have on which contaminated food sat. People with salmonella can suffer the above symptoms and, occasionally, urinary tract infections, arterial infections and endocarditis.
