HIGH POINT — After countless requests, The Salvation Army of High Point will now offer pet food in its food pantry, thanks to a recent partnership with the Humane Society of the Piedmont.
As of Monday, dog and cat food became available at The Salvation Army’s food pantry at 301 W. Green Avenue for eligible clients.
Antoine Dalton, director of social services at The Salvation Army, said the organization received four to eight inquires a day about assistance with pet food.
“One of the things we like to do in social services is identify needs of a community, and a lot of times when residents come in for food assistance they often ask if we have any pet food as well for their animals,” he said. “As a pet owner, they’re considered part of the family.”
He started reaching out to some animal rescues in the area, which led him to the Humane Society of the Piedmont, which agreed to donate pet food every other week.
The amount of food given to a family depends on the size of the animal, he said.
“We are so grateful for the partnership with the Humane Society of the Piedmont, especially now that we are able to provide assistance for pets when families come to us for food assistance.,” Dalton said.
In addition, The Salvation Army is accepting donations of pet food.
Dalton said the new partnership may expand this summer, as the groups are looking to create a mobile vaccination clinic to help with pet vaccinations.
The Salvation Army Food Pantry is open Monday-Thursday from 8:30-11:30 a.m. It reopens Mondays and Wednesdays from 1-3 p.m. For more information, call 336-881-5400.
