CARLISLE – A regional supermarket chain is warning customers not to feed their brand of dog food to their pets.
Giant Food Stores and Martin's Food Markets announced in a press release Tuesday that they have removed Nature’s Promise Chicken and Brown Rice dog food from their shelves as it may contain excessive amounts of vitamin D, which may cause renal failure in dogs. The chain announced the voluntary recall after Sunshine Mills, Inc., a pet food and animal feed manufacturer, issued a recall.

Nature’s Promise Chicken & Brown Rice Dog Food 4 lb, with Best By Dates of November 1, 2018 – November 8, 2019
Nature’s Promise Chicken & Brown Rice Dog Food 14 lb with Best By Dates of November 1, 2018 – November 8, 2019
Nature’s Promise Chicken & Brown Rice Dog Food 28 lb with Best By Dates of November 1, 2018 – November 8, 2019
Giant and Martin’s stores have removed these products from its shelves and are encouraging customers to return the products to their local stores for a full refund. Customers should stop feeding the product to their pets.
Illnesses related to the ingestion of the Nature's Promise Chicken & Brown Rice dog food have yet to be reported, according to the press release.
Dogs ingesting high levels of vitamin D may exhibit symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, and weight loss. Vitamin D, when consumed at very high levels, can lead to serious health issues in dogs including renal dysfunction. Customers with dogs who have consumed any of the products listed above and are exhibiting any of these symptoms, should contact their veterinarian.
