KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Hill's Pet Nutrition expanded its recall of certain canned dog food because of elevated levels of vitamin D.
A dog exhibiting signs of elevated vitamin D levels prompted Hill's Pet Nutrition to investigate. That investigation confirmed elevated levels of vitamin D caused by a supplier error.
The initial results showed canned dog food products to be affected. Further review revealed additional affected products which prompted an expanded recall.
The Food and Drug Administration provided a full list online of affected products.
According to the FDA, vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs, however, elevated levels can cause symptoms ranging from vomiting to rare, life threatening situations.
Symptoms of extreme exposure to vitamin D include increased thirst, loss of appetite, increased urination, excessive drooling and weight loss.
In most cases, recovery is expected after food is discontinued.
In the United States, canned dog foods were sourced through retail pet stores and veterinary clinics. Dry foods, cat foods and treats are not affected.
