Terre Haute, IN - The mission of the Terre Haute Humane Society is to give animals their forever homes. One way they're helping keep dogs and cats at home is through a very important service they offer to pet owners.

"We offer a food pantry for the public if they need assistance," says Interim GM Sarah Valentine.

People from the community are able to come in once a month to get whatever food they need to feed their pets. All they need to show is their name and address.

"We ask no questions about their finances. That's not what we're here for. We're here for the animals, so we're always happy to help them out if we have the food available," say Valentine.

For health monitoring purposes, the Terre Haute Humane Society feeds their dogs and cats specific foods, so a lot of what is donated goes to the pet food pantry.

"You know it might be the end of the month. They might not have enough food to get through until they get their next check," explains Valentine.

It's heartwarming to be able to help the community.

"The last thing we want is for them to have to give up their animals just because they can't afford to feed them for the entire month," says Valentine. "People need to be able to keep their pets. They're companions. They make their days better and we don't want them to lose that."

The Terre Haute Humane Society says the pet food pantry is always in need of donations, especially cat food.

"We depend on this community and we all have to rally together to keep these animals in their homes," says Valentine.

As long as the Terre Haute Humane Society has the pet food available, their doors are open to pet owners in need.

"We don't judge you for coming in here. We don't care what your financial situation is. If you need help, come get help. We're here for that," says Valentine.
