Reading, PA – We are happy to announce that in support of our mission to empower people in our communities to increase their capacity to care for animals so that all animals are healthy, safe, and treated humanely – we will be participating in this year’s Clear the Shelters event. In partnership with NBC10, we will be offering a FREE adoption day at the Humane Society of Berks County, Saturday, August 17, 2019.
NBC Philadelphia/Telemundo 62 is promoting this event as a day where participating shelters and rescues WAIVE ADOPTION FEES.
As stated by founding partner, NBC10…
“In honor of National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day, which aims to bring awareness to the nation’s animal-homelessness crisis, we’d like to remind you that on August 17, 2019 NBC and Telemundo stations across the country will team up with hundreds of shelters nationwide for the fifth annual Clear the Shelters animal adoption event.”
This FREE adoption day provides families with the ability to welcome a new beloved family member into their hearts without needing to pay the standard adoption fee. Throughout the event, families can view, select, and meet-and-greet with any animals; dogs, cats, and critters they’d like, that are available for adoption.
Adopters wishing to provide a loving home for a shelter pet are encouraged to visit the shelter or HumanePA.org to learn more about the animals currently available for adoption. Every type, size, age and personality of pet are all waiting for a caring home.
For efficiency, interested potential adopters are also encouraged to come into the shelter prior to the start of the adoption event to complete an adoption assistance application and begin the process for adoption approval. Adoption approval is required before any potential adopter can meet with a pet.
All potential adopters during this adoption event are required to go through the same diligent adoption screening process as any other adopter. However, once approved, the pet adoption fee will be waived.
- Waived Adoption Fees Include:
- Humane Pennsylvania’s Thirty Day Adoption Health Supplement
- Spaying or Neutering (prior to adoption)
- Vaccinations (including current rabies vaccination) and de-worming medication
- Flea Treatment
- Microchipping and chip registration
- Free 2 lb. bag of Science Diet Pet Food (dogs) or free 1 lb. bag of Science Diet Pet Food. Science Diet partners with Humane Pennsylvania to provide great nutrition to all cats in our shelters.
Adoption Hours: Saturday 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
In addition to the free adoption event, we are hosting a Pay it Forward for Pets, pet food donation drive. Community members are encouraged to pay it forward to a pet in need and donate a bag of pet food to our Spike’s Pet Pantry.
Spike’s Pet Pantry is a pet food bank program which provides resources, specifically food, and nutrition education for pet owners in need. The ultimate goal is to prevent pet surrender due to food insecurity or temporary hardship.
Our program partners are in need of unopened bags of dog and cat food in a variety of sizes. The brand of the food is not important.
This food will be handed out to those in need at our shelter, as well as distributed at local food pantries that assist families in need throughout Berks County.
Please visit our Amazon Wish List, and all donations can be shipped directly to the Humane Society of Berks County shelter. Or donations of any unopened bags of dog and cat food, can be dropped off at HSBC during normal business hours.
We encourage you to cover our Clear the Shelters, FREE adoption event and Pay it Forward for Pets, pet food drive, at The Humane Society of Berks County, Saturday, August 17, 2019. The Humane Society of Berks County is located at 1801 N. 11th Street in Reading, PA 19604.
