Also this weekend, nine former Pet Extreme stores throughout Northern California — including Woodland — are converting to Pet Supplies Plus. The company plans on marking its territory with a grand opening.

The openings will mark the first for Pet Supplies Plus in California (2091 Bronze Star Dr. in Woodland). It comes on the heels of receiving “Pet Business” magazine’s prestigious Retailer of the Year Award and adding more than 50 stores in the first eight months of 2016. The national retailer now has more than 370 locations across the United States.

“Our pets have a way of adding so much value to our lives that naturally, we want to do everything we can to take care of our pets,” said Pet Supplies Plus CEO Chris Rowland. “Our stores are large enough to carry everything your pet needs and you can always expect to receive neighborly service. Ultimately, we want to provide our neighbors and their pets with the best shopping experience possible.”

The new neighborhood pet stores will carry an extensive variety of Made in the USA pet consumables, such as wet and dry food, treats, rawhide, chews and more, all at great prices and with a price-match guarantee. The stores will feature a carry-out service to help neighbors carry heavy purchases, and free Preferred Pet Club, which offers members the benefit of regular coupons and monthly specials

A silent quilt auction will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Woodland Christian Church (509 College St.), to benefit the “Dorothy Minges Student Emergency Fund.”

The fund, which was established last fall, is dedicated to support Woodland Community College students who face sudden financial hardships that could interfere with their studies.

Created by the Woodland Community College Foundation, of which Minges was a longtime member, the special account helps students who need short-term assistance related to housing, utilities and education.

There are 30 quilted pieces made and used by Minges up for bid. Bids start at $10 and up, depending on the size, age, design and condition of the piece.

The hand-pieced quilted items vary in size, including queen bed, lap throws, table cloths, table toppers, seasonal wall hangings and pillows.

Step Up and Power Down will close its Woodland office by the end of the year, it announced in an email. It launched in May 2015.

“With Woodland in such a great place, the Step Up and Power Down team is gearing up this fall to move to another community,” states the announcement. “While the office will close by the end of the year, our partnership with the city of Woodland will continue and you’ll still have access to many of the online resources we’ve been sharing with you all along. We will also still be in touch at select community events and in your inbox.

“The city of Woodland along with you, and other committed residents and organizations will also still be ‘here’ and will carry on the momentum you’ve created so far. Through October, we are still here full-time to support you.”

Step Up and Power Down is hosting a “Proof is Possible Green Fair” from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 9. at the Woodland Public Library. There will be a tour of “Tiny Lab,” an ultra-efficient 200-square-foot tiny house on wheels, and a workshop to see how you can apply lessons from this “whole house” approach in order to increase efficiency and comfort in your own home.

More information on the Green Fair to come.
