DOVER — Loyal sidekicks of the furry, four-legged variety will be celebrated at the inaugural Best Friends Pet Expo on The Green on Saturday.

The free event is presented by the Delaware State News and will take place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. and will offer lots of giveaways, demonstrations, vendors and door prizes in a historical setting.

“This will be a fun day for people and their beloved pets,” said Heather Cregar, the director of the Best Friends Pet Expo. “People are welcome to bring their pets with them. It is a pet-friendly event.”

Ms. Cregar said there will be plenty to see and do at the expo.

“The Dover Police Department’s K-9 Department is going to be there and they’re going to be doing a demonstration and talk about their equipment and the training that their patrol dogs go through,” she said.

“The First State Animal Center and SPCA is going to have pets available for adoption and they’ll be selling T-shirts and things to raise money for the SPCA.”

Those are just a couple of the highlights.

Winner Subaru is bringing three Subaru and three Volkswagen vehicles — all pet friendly — and it will have some pet-themed giveaways, too.

Concord Pet Foods and Supplies will provide samples of its products and Doggone Good Dog Training will offer training tips for attendees.

Staff from Jax n Daisy Products, a local company that makes pet shampoos and conditioners, will offer advice on washing dogs.

There will also be a pet photo booth available where people can get a picture of their pets, with the option of accessorizing them with things like crazy headbands and feather boas.

“The Kritter Sitter has donated shopping bags that we’re going to be handing out so that people as they go around and visit the different vendors, they can go around and fill them up with the giveaway items,” Ms. Cregar said. “They’ll also be able to shop while they’re there. There will be lots of pet supply places that will be there in addition to our sponsor, Concord Pets.”

Other Pet Expo participants include: The Bath House, Beaverdam Pet Food, Impact Insurance, Pet Valu, Peterson’s Positive Pups and the Yam & Bone Pet Supply Co.

For the two-legged half of the Best Friends Pet Expo, the Delicious Craving food truck will be on hand serving up Greek cuisine and an eclectic array of street food.

“We’re hoping the weather’s going to be good and will give people a chance to kind of get out and visit some new businesses that maybe they haven’t visited yet and learn about some new products,” said Ms. Cregar. “This will be our first Best Friends Pet Expo of what we hope will become an annual event.”
