Oakland Welcomes Pet Food Express with Adoption Center and More - Pet Age

On Saturday, September 24, Pet Food Express celebrated the opening of its newest store, which includes a permanent cat adoption center. The store, located in Oakland, California, is the company’s 63rd store.

A public/non-profit/corporate three-way partnership, the new, state-of-the-art adoption center is run by Oakland’s Hopalong Animal Rescue, and the group has promised to pull its cats from Oakland Animal Services. This is the first off-site adoption center for Oakland Animal Shelter, and the goal is to reduce cat euthanasia rates to zero in Oakland.

The store also held a mini-adoptathon during opening weekend with Oakland Animal Services, Hopalong and Milo Animal Rescue. Six dogs and 12 cats/kittens were adopted over the weekend.

Pet Food Express has other things for customers to look out for as well, including:

  • Newly redesigned self-service pet washes with spa features including “mango-tango” pet shampoo
  • An indoor dog park and outdoor training space
  • VIP pet wellness clinic (offering affordable well visit vet care)
  • Dozens of pet portraits (called My Mutts) that are used to raise funds for pet rescues and shelters in the area
  • PFE—Pet Food Ingredient Standards—which bans suspect ingredients found in many dog and cat foods
