The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) is hosting the AAFCO Pet & Specialty Pet Food Labeling Workshop, primarily for pet food production and marketing professionals, in conjunction with its annual meeting in Bellevue, Wash.
“With an ever increasing number of pet foods lining the shelves, providing purchasers with clear and consistent labeling information to assist them in making informed decisions for their pets’ nutritional needs is more important than ever,” said Kristen Green, AAFCO pet food committee vice chair.
To that end, the day-and-a-half workshop will help industry professionals understand and interpret AAFCO model regulations related to the labeling of pet food and related products such as treats and supplements. The workshop will cover the basics and delve into more complex issues related to product claims.
This is an opportunity to improve essential skills, network with regulators and others in the field, and get hands-on experience dealing with complex labeling issues. AAFCO is a voluntary membership association of local, state and federal agencies charged by law to regulate the sale and distribution of animal feeds and animal drug remedies.
Although AAFCO has no regulatory authority, the association provides a forum for the membership and industry representation to achieve these goals: safeguarding the health of animals and humans, ensuring consumer protection and providing a level playing field of orderly commerce for the animal feed industry. These goals are achieved by developing and implementing uniform and equitable laws, regulations, standards, definitions and enforcement policies for regulating the manufacture, labeling, distribution, and sale of animal feeds—resulting in safe, effective, and useful feeds by promoting uniformity among member agencies.
The AAFCO Pet Food Committee works cooperatively with the Food & Drug Administration, the pet food industry and other stakeholders to monitor, review and recommend appropriate revisions to the AAFCO Official Publication as related to pet food and specialty pet food and suggest additional activities, when such are needed, to more effectively (1) provide protection for the consumer and the regulated industry; (2) safeguard the health of humans and animals; (3) provide a structure for orderly commerce, and (4) provide recommendations and assistance for training, workshops, and educational materials regarding pet food and specialty pet food.
