Is your pet food safe? Report shows many contain toxins, lead - WKBW - WKBW-TV

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) - If you're trying to save some cash by switching from brand-name pet food, a new study could have you thinking twice.  The Clean Label Project just released a report that shows many off-brand, also known as private label, dog and cat foods may contain toxins.

The study tested brand-name and private label food.  It found that private label foods typically tested higher for toxic contaminants than national brands.  Dry cat food was given the worst rating, with some brands containing lead and pesticides.

Only two private label products made it to the "Top 10" out of the 79 brands the Clean Label Project tested.  They were "Whole Paws" which is made by Whole Foods, and "Pet Pride" from Kroger.  The "Kirkland Brand" from Costco and "American Journey" from Chewy.com were ranked worst.
