LONDON, Nov. 14, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The Manufacture of Animal Feeds and Pet Food : The animal feeds industry is divided into the formal feed industry represented by the Animal Feed Manufacturers' Association (AFMA) and the informal or on-farm sector unaffiliated to AFMA. In the highly competitive formal sector, total national feed production during 2015/2016 was estimated at 11.66 million metric tons, with AFMA members contributing 61%. The value of national feed production in 2015 was approximately R50bn while the local pet food sector, which includes the growing premium pet food category, recorded retail sales of R5bn.

Regulatory Developments: One of the main objectives of the proposed draft Animal Feeds Bill is the modernisation of the regulatory framework so that food security, economic growth, rural development priorities and industry competitiveness are achieved. The bill is expected to be available for public comment by the end of 2016. In the sector progress has also been made as far as unprocessed registrations for raw materials, feed additives, livestock feed and pet food are concerned, with the backlog of 874 feed manufacturing registration applications having been processed by July 2016.
Opportunities: Despite the ongoing challenges as a result of reduced rainfall in 2014, the drought of 2015/2016, the ensuing shortages of raw materials and significant raw material cost increases, the animal feed industry has seen continuous growth and feed companies have reported good results. This trend is expected to as a result of population growth, increasing urbanisation, rising consumer spending and increasing per capita meat and animal protein consumption.
