The Port Jervis Library, 138 Pike Street, has started its annual Food for Fines program. The program aims at giving back to the community around the holiday season, while giving residents a chance to clear their library fines. The food drive continues to Dec. 23.

For each food item brought into the library, patron's fine for late returns of items will be reduced by $1 up to $10 maximum. Food must be unopened, not damaged, and not past expiration date. Only non-perishable items will be accepted. All the food raised will be donated to a local food pantry.

The library is also collecting dog and cat food (both canned and dry), and dog and cat treats to donate to the homeless animals at the Humane Society of Port Jervis/Deerpark. The library will reduce overdue fees by $1 up to $10 maximum.

Food and pet food donations will be accepted for late return fees only, and cannot be applied to lost or damaged items. The library can be reached at 845-856-7313.
