Local pet food entrepreneur gets national recognition for freeze-dried dog meals - Shelburne News

A South Burlington entrepreneur has been recognized by Pet Business magazine for the development of freeze-dried bland diet pet products.

Kyla Sternlieb is founder and president of Under the Weather. She said her efforts were recognized by the trade publication, which highlights a handful of innovative new products each year.

“We are honored to be recognized by Pet Business for our line of freeze-dried bland diets, products initially developed when the company launched in 2015. The original inspiration was Ruffy, my Wheaten Terrier, who developed digestive issues and needed help fast,” Sternlieb said.

The vet recommended a bland diet of cooked chicken and rice, a typical approach to soothe an irritated digestive system. But after cooking and preparing multiple meals for her pet, Sternlieb thought there could be an easier way to have bland pet meals on hand.

Under the Weather’s freeze-dried meals don’t need refrigeration and come in single-serving packages.

Sternlieb said all natural ingredients are used, including cage-free chicken and turkey, grass-fed beef, free-range bison and wild-caught salmon.  “All are antibiotic and hormone free and processed in a USDA human-grade facility. Our formulas contain no meat by-products, gluten, artificial flavors, dyes or chemicals,” she said.

The company also makes supplements for dogs and hemp-based soft chews. Sternlieb said she’s working on a product line for cats this year.

The company’s products are available at independent pet supply stores.
