EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- The Eau Claire County Humane Association has typical animals up for adoption – and some atypical ones, too.
"We've had roosters, mini-horses, lizards, snakes, a tarantula," Elizabeth Berg, kennel supervisor for the humane association, said to WEAU 13 News on Tuesday.
Feeding all those animals, however, takes help from the community.
"I don't think there's a day that goes by when someone doesn't come in and donate us food either dog food cat food and various supplies among other things," Berg said.
That food – and generosity – can add up.
It's in that spirit Berg went out Tuesday to stock the humane association's newest way to spread kindness and generosity – an outdoor pet pantry, which opened at the beginning of the year. Berg said it’s designed for those struggling to feed those who mean so much to them.
"We really wanted to be able to do something here in this community to help out and give back some of our overflow that we get," she said.
All the food is properly portioned especially for cats and dogs. Berg said she’s glad that the humane association’s charitable act has not gone abused.
"That's really awesome and I think it reflects on the community that we have, and just knowing that they're just going to take what they need and leave the rest for other people that need it," she said.
While Berg says the pantry has been a welcome addition for the humane association, she sees it as just another way to give back.
"You don't want someone to not be able to own their pets at the same time because it can help people,” she said. “So, if I can help a pet get or someone to be able to keep their pet, then it's kind of a win-win."
