Carnivore Meat Company recalled two Vital Essentials frozen raw dog food products on salmonella concerns, two months after recalling a Vital Essentials Freeze Dried Beef Nibblets for the same reason.
This time, the products are Vital Essentials Freeze-Dried Beef Toppers and Vital Essentials Frozen Beef Chub Entrée for Dogs, one lot each. The FDA found salmonella when testing a batch.
So, customers should check whether they have lot No. 13815 with Best By dates of June 4, 2019, or June 20, 2019, of the Beef Toppers or lot No. 13816 with a Best By date of Dec. 27, 2018, of the 5-pound chubs of Frozen Beef Chub Entrée for Dogs.
Anyone with products from these lots "are urged to discard them safely in a covered trash receptacle," according to the recall notice posted on the company's website. Refunds can be obtained from the retailer. Those with questions can call 920-370-6542.
Those inside the pet food industry and who watch it diligently have differing reasons for the recent shower of pet food recalls for salmonella or listeria.
One theory, put forth by an executive speaking to The Miami Herald in March after his product was recalled, said it's a cyclical FDA focus that's now on pet food. He expected another few weeks of recalls. Another theory put forth is the FDA has a zero tolerance for salmonella or listeria in pet food, which it doesn't for human food likely to be cooked. The overwhelming number of recalls have been for raw pet food.
