4th Annual Pet Food Drive - WTVY, Dothan

DOTHAN, Ala (WTVY) - The community stepped up today... To help the Wiregrass Humane Society.

WTVY teamed up with the shelter and the Southern Regional Veterinary Specialists for the 4th Annual Pet Food Drive.

Foy Holmes took time out of his Friday to help feed animals at the humane society saying, "we donate every year because you got a lot of dogs that run around the street - I’ve seen strays everywhere , people need to take care of pets , pets can’t take care of themselves"

Just like Foy, others drove up and dropped off donations all day. Whether it was dog food, cat food or a monetary donation, by the end of the day - more than $1,200 in cash and over 2,000 pounds of food were collected.

That's good news for board member Tammy Curtis who said, "It takes a lot of food to feed a hundred animals every day."

Curtis says they have close to one hundred and fifty cats and dogs at the shelter.

This food drive helps cut their food costs, so they can use the money for other expenses.

"A lot of our animals that come in need a lot of care beyond just the basic spay and neuter and vaccines, a lot of them you know have skin conditions , or medical conditions that we need to treat as well," said Curtis.

But today's event wasn't just about dropping off donations.
At least two people took something home.

"We got set up, and before we could get the dogs settled in the cage we had a lady show interest in one of our pups named molly and 8 month schnauzer, and she fell in love took her on a little walk and
Decided to do paperwork and take her home" said a member of the Wiregrass Humane Society.

But she wasn't the only one, Jared the dachshund was also adopted.

All the money and food will be donated to the Wiregrass Humane Society.
