The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Thursday that the outbreak has made 90 people sick across 26 states, but no deaths have been reported.

Among them, 40 people have been hospitalized, including six in California. No hospitalizations linked to this outbreak have been reported in Santa Clarita, but residents are encouraged to take precautions.

Public health officials have not identified a single source for the outbreak because victims have reported eating different types and brands of turkey products purchased from several locations, according to the CDC.

In addition, two of the people reported they became sick after pets in their home ate raw ground turkey pet food.

Samples of raw turkey pet food, raw turkey products and live turkeys have tested positive for the outbreak strain of salmonella, which could mean the outbreak is widespread in the turkey industry, said the CDC in a statement.

However, the agency is not advising stores to stop selling raw turkey products, instead warning cooks both in-store and at home to properly cook the raw turkey products.

Consumers should wash their hands, make sure any raw turkey is cooked thoroughly and carefully wash areas where raw turkey was handled, and dog owners should avoid raw food diets, according to the CDC.

Symptoms of salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps about 12 to 72 hours after being exposed to the bacteria. The illness usually lasts between four and seven days and most people recover without treatment, according to the CDC.

An estimated 1.2 million salmonella cases occur annually in the United States, and various foods are the source for about 1 million of those illnesses, CDC officials said.
