PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Federal workers are looking forward to a paycheck now that the 35-day government shutdown has ended. Despite that, Providence Animal Center in Media will be offering free pet food to government employees as long as there is a need.

"People have been without paychecks for a while," said the shelter's spokeswoman Justina Calgiano. "There are priorities, and we want to make their pets, feeding their pets, a priority at no cost to them, and we're prepared to do it as long as it is needed."

Calgiano says those in need can contact the shelter for a pick-up time.

"Its usually a general window of time, so its not too specific, but we schedule a day for them to stop by so that we have the food that they need at that time," she said.
