Dog food recall: Does your pet show signs of vitamin D overdose? - WKRN News 2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) - The FDA has recalled 9 dog food brands that contain excessive amounts of vitamin D.

The recalls started in December. Some of the affected brands include Evolve, Triumph, Sportsman's Pride, Natural Life and Abound.

Veterinarians say vitamin D is essential to your pet's diet, but there are some potentially dangerous signs you need to look for to find out if they've had too much.

Dr. Staci Cannon from Metro Animal Care and Control explains what to look for.

"If your pet gets too much vitamin D, their body can't eliminate that safely and it actually can build up and cause kidney failure," says Dr. Cannon.

"So the signs of kidney failure if dogs have too much vitamin D are things like vomiting, loss of appetite, they might be drinking a lot of water or urinating excessively, maybe losing weight. And if that goes untreated they can die from kidney failure. So if anyone sees any signs of illness in their pet, the most important thing is to take them to the veterinarian for an exam and to talk with your vet about what pet food you're using."
