BOISE — The Idaho Humane Society announced Friday the start of a pet food program to help federal employees who haven’t seen a paycheck since the government shutdown.

The society’s Pet Food Pantry program provides resources such as pet food and treats and has extended its assistance for furloughed federal employees struggling to provide for their pets, according to a press release.

All furloughed federal employees are invited to the Humane Society in Boise between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sunday for distribution of a month’s worth of pet food for up to four household pet. Federal ID will be required.

Another event will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 30, however, the society said it will stay open a little longer for those who cannot make it by 5 p.m.

“We’re honored to extend a helping hand to our friends and neighbors who are federal employees who’ve been impacted by this government shutdown,” said Kristine Schellhaas, spokeswoman for the IHS. “We see their dedication to our country every day and we’re proud to not only help our community members, but their pets as well.”

Community members who would like to donate to the Pet Food Pantry can do so — the program is in special need of wet cat food. Donations of wet dog food, small training treats and quality cat and dog food in bags of 20 pounds or less will be accepted.
