Pet owners are saying a recalled brand of dog food is killing their dogs.

Hill's Pet Nutrition recalled their Prescription Diet and Science Diet canned dog foods on January 31 over concerns about elevated levels of vitamin D.

Some of the health problems caused by dogs consuming vitamin D at high levels include vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling and weight loss. In some cases, it can lead to more serious issues, including renal dysfunction, NBC Chicago reported.

After Hill's posted about the recall on Facebook, more than a dozen dog owners replied with stories of their own dogs becoming sick or dying, some more than a month before the recall was issued. Many are seeking compensation for the hundreds - even thousands - of dollars in vet bills.

"They need to take responsibility for this. They cost us a family member," Christina Marie Sawyer told NBC News. Sawyer's dog "Taco" died after he began eating the food for a stomach problem.

The company is asking the grieving pet owners to call them, but some say their calls are going unanswered.

Hill's said the vitamin D came from an unnamed supplier in Texas and have required that company to implement additional quality testing.

More than two dozen types of canned dog food were voluntarily recalled by Hill's. Dry dog food, cat food and treats were not affected.
