KINGWOOD — Four years ago, Realtor Jessica Lipscomb was saddened to hear how some families struggle to feed their pets and pay higher utility bills in the winter.
“That just broke my heart,” Lipscomb said Monday. “I’ve always just felt home is where the pets are.”
So she and the others at Houses & More Real Estate in Kingwood did something to help. This year marked the firm’s Fourth Annual Share the Love Valentine’s Day Pet Food Drive.
On Monday, Alix Evans, outreach coordinator with Catholic Charities, picked up the pet food to take to the Raymond Wolfe Center Food Pantry, in Kingwood. Evans said, often, folks don’t go out and adopt pets, the animals just show up, and they take them in.
When utility bills go up in the winter, they sometimes have to give up the animals to shelters because they can’t afford pet food, utilities and food for themselves, she said.
Evans said the pantry also gets pet food donations from the Kingwood Save A Lot, Walmart and Preston County Animal Shelter. But more is always needed, she said. Evans can also give residents applications for spay and neuter grants for their pets.
The Raymond Wolfe Center Food Pantry is at 119 S. Price St. Call 304-329-3644 for hours or to make donations. Volunteers will help carry donations inside.
