Natural pet food company Blue Buffalo opened its new, $200 manufacturing facility in Richmond, IN on Tuesday, the firm’s parent company, General Mills, announced in a release. The new plant is capable of producing over 1 million lb/day of dry cat and dog food.

“With this expanded manufacturing capability, General Mills and Blue Buffalo can better meet the growing demand for pet food made with natural ingredients,” General Mills Chief Executive Officer and Chairman Jeff Harmening said in a statement. “This new plant is another example of General Mills accelerating the growth of our natural and organic brands.”

The 400,000-sq-ft Richmond facility is the second production facility opened by Blue Buffalo. BLUE Life Protection Formula, BLUE Wilderness, BLUE Basics, and BLUE Freedom dry dog and cat foods will be manufactured at the site.

“Our new state-of-the-art plant in Richmond exceeds industry standards in food safety and product quality, and will allow Blue Buffalo to feed more pets and reach more pet parents wherever they shop,” Blue Buffalo Pet Foods President Billy Bishop said in the release.

165 full-time jobs in food processing, quality assurance, maintenance, and plant management were created as a result of the opening of the facility. Work on the plant started in 2016.
