KSU and IGP Institute Offer Pet Food Formulation Course - Powder Bulk Solids

Kansas State University (KSU) and the IGP Institute are teaming up to offer a course on pet food formulation running from January 13 to 17, 2020 that will cover ingredients, processes, and technology used to create new pet food products.

The course, Pet Food Formulation for Commercial Production, offers instruction on tools used in creating new products, how to revise existing formulas, regulatory concerns, and how to conduct business and production analyses. Instructors will also provide an overview of the raw ingredients used in pet food manufacturing, their composition, and processing considerations. Attendees will also learn the basics of animal nutrition and dietary needs (particularly companion animals, like dogs and cats).

Greg Aldrich, research associate professor at KSU who has worked to develop formulas for leading pet food companies for over three decades, will lead the course. Hands on learning activities will be conducted by Charles Stark, associate professor of feed technology, and Sajid Alavi, professor and extrusion processing specialist. Kadri Koppel, assistant professor of nutrition, will review nutrition, regulations, and shelf-life considerations with attendees, as well as the palatability and sensory aspects of pet foods.
