Holiday Pet Food Drive seeks donations - Newsday

Huntington Town Councilwoman Susan A. Berland has launched the 2016 Holiday Pet Food Drive, a chance for animal lovers to donate food that will be given to pets through the holiday season.

The drive is focused on collecting cat and dog food, and all proceeds will go to The Harry Chapin Food Bank and Humanitarian Center in Huntington Station, which accepts pet food donations year-round.

Collections started the week after Thanksgiving, with donations being accepted through Jan. 3, 2017.

Last season about 2,500 pounds of pet food were donated — nearly four times the 650 pounds collected in the first drive in 2014-15.

An owner of multiple cats and dogs, Berland came up with the idea for the pet food drive three years ago. Since then, the number of drop-off points has tripled — from two locations to six. A spokesman for Berland’s office said the drive has evolved into a community effort as more local businesses and residents sought to get involved.

Pet food donations can be dropped at the following locations:
Huntington Town Hall, 100 Main St., Huntington
Huntington Animal Shelter, 106 Deposit Rd., East Northport
Cold Spring Harbor Library, 95 Harbor Rd., Cold Spring Harbor
Half Hollow Hills Community Library, 55 Vanderbilt Pkwy., Dix Hills
Doggie Don’s Long Island Pet Center, 128 Laurel Rd., East Northport
Selmer’s Pet Land, 125 E. Jericho Tpke., South Huntington
