Sadly, George still is waiting for a home. Also sadly, many more puppies, dogs, kittens and cats are, as well. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said 6.5 million companion animals enter animal shelters every year.
If you can, make a difference in one of their lives. Bring one home for Christmas.
Below is information on the local shelters and rescues that contribute weekly to “Pets of the Week.”
Hopeful Tails Animal Rescue
According to its website, Hopeful Tails is a 501c3 nonprofit rescue founded by individuals who wished to make a difference in the lives of abandoned, abused and/or neglected animals.
Voice mail is checked once daily; email is the best way to contact this rescue. Email details of the pet you’re seeking and Hopeful Tails will try to match it. All adoption fees include pay/neuter, vaccinations and microchip.

Humane Haven Animal Shelter
According to its website, Humane Haven Animal Shelter (HHAS) is a nonprofit, 501(c)3 tax-exempt and state-licensed humane society. All money used in the operation of this 100 percent volunteer-run shelter is gathered through fundraising and private donations and goes to the animals’ care. No tax dollars apply.
Prospective adopters must be 21 and live within 90 minutes of the shelter. HHAS reserves the right to deny any applicant interested in adopting a pet. Fees are $175 (kitten), $125 (adult cat) and $75 (senior cat), which includes age-appropriate vetting, according to the website.

Joliet Township Animal Control
According to its Facebook page, Joliet Township animal control has a population of puppies, kittens and adult animals available for adoption.

NAWS Humane Society of Illinois
According to its Facebook page, NAWS is a 501c3 nonprofit no-kill humane society. In addition to pet adoption and boarding, its medical center specializes in affordable veterinary care and spay/neuter surgery. One hundred percent of proceeds fund its pet rescue program.
According to its website, NAWS has several cats available for adoption at the PetSmart on Wolf Road and Route 30 in Mokena on Wolf Road and Route 30. Adoptable dogs are available at various PetSmart, Petco, and Pet Supplies Plus locations on weekends.

adoption visits at the NAWS Campus.

Wags 2 Wishes Animal Rescue
According to its Facebook page, Wags 2 Wishes Animal Rescue was established in May 2013. This foster-based rescue has grown to over 50 volunteers and moved into the Pet Supply Outlet Building in Plainfield.
The rescue center is open seven days a week and houses a pet supply store, groomer, dog training, and daycare/boarding. Prospective adopters must be 21 and provide a veterinarian reference.
Adoption fees range from $375 to $425, according to the website. The fee includes age-appropriate vetting and microchip. For information, visit www.w2wrescue.com.
Will County Humane Society
According to its website, Will County Humane Society is a no-kill shelter, which “challenges the methods of traditional animal sheltering that for centuries has involved managing pet overpopulation by killing the surplus of homeless pets.”
Pets stay as long as needed to find a forever home, with the shelter caring for its daily and medical needs. Typically 75 cats and 35 dogs live at the shelter at any given time.
Those seeking to adopt must be 21 and live within 90 minutes of the shelter. The adoption fee is $150 for kittens and cats and $250 for dogs. The fee includes vetting and spaying/neutering.
