Humans aren’t the only ones who may need a helping hand during the holidays. North Platte’s less fortunate dogs and cats could use a paw up too.
The North Platte Pet Food Pantry will host a food drive Jan. 11 to help replenish stocks in a time of high demand.
“We usually see an increase (in need) after the holidays,” said manager Susan Kubart.
The pet food pantry typically serves 35 to 40 families in need, but has had to cut back on how much it gives out because of a supply shortage.
“We’re in dire straits with our supplies,” Kubart said.
The pantry especially needs dry dog and cat foods, and cat litter. Its reserves are low because of a decline in donations.
“Blue Buffalo used to donate quarterly, but we haven’t been able to go pick up (donations) from Omaha,” Kubart said.
With help from NBC Nebraska, a food drive will run from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 11. Food and other items can be dropped off by driving through the television station’s parking lot at 402 S. Dewey St. The entrance is on D Street. Hot cocoa will be offered.
“We’re probably going to need more cat food than dog food right now,” Kubart said. “But dog food is always helpful too. We go through a lot of it faster.”
The pantry at 2505 Rodeo Road is open from 6 to 6:30 p.m. on Monday and Thursday. Contact Kubart at 402-340-0369 for more information.
Kubart added that the pantry is grateful to the individuals and businesses who have helped in the past.
“We get a lot of community support, and there is a huge need,” she said.
