Low income pet owners can apply for pet food assistance - Clarksville Now

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.- (CLARKSVILLENOW) The Humane Society will open its doors January 8 from 2-5 p.m. to accept applications from low income pet owners in need of assistance with dog or cat food.

This time slot is reserved for households that have never received food bank assistance from the Humane Society in the past.

Qualifying pet owners will be required to provide a photo ID and proof of low income public assistance such as WIC, food stamps, Section 8 housing, or unemployment. Food allocations will be limited to up to 30 lbs. per family at the discretion of Humane Society staff.

The Humane Society has provided a pet food bank for low income families in Montgomery Co. since 2004 and depends solely on donations from the public and local retailers. Thus far, the Humane Society has relied on word of mouth advertising to build its food bank clientele to nearly 650 households and allocates an average of 40,000 pounds of pet food & litter annually. With a few more local retailers now on board donating food, including a partnership with Manna Café, the organization is welcoming new families who have never received pet food assistance to apply for the program. (No pet food is distributed from Manna Café locations.)

To ensure resources are available and fair for all families, food allocations are offered no more than once every three months. All pets in the home must be spayed or neutered without exception. The Humane Society Spay-Neuter Clinic can assist with low-cost surgeries to help families comply with this requirement and will be offering $5 off coupons on Monday to families in need.

Food allocations are intended to supplement and/or assist families temporarily. Households that continue to struggle with feeding their population, even with the help of food assistance, may work with the Humane Society’s pet placement program to help downsize their population. All families are encouraged to strive to keep only the number of pets that they can properly feed, vet & otherwise care for. Acquiring additional animals while on the food bank program is not permitted.

Regular food bank hours are Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 12pm-2pm for existing clients (or new clients that are unavailable on Monday). The Humane Society is located at 940 Tennessee Ave. behind the Arby’s on Riverside Dr. For more information, contact 931-648-8042 or email humanesociety@clarksville.com.
