Swap coat or pet food for a cat at Humane Society of Berks County ... - Reading Eagle

A cat for a coat or pet food is an even trade for the next week.

The Humane Society of Berks County and the Humane League of Lancaster County are experiencing an overflow of cats.

So, to help ease the strain, the shelters are offering a free cat to anyone who donates an adult winter coat or pet food.

The program begins today and will run until Jan. 23.

Coats received by the shelters will be donated to Berks Connections Pretrial Services, which provides services and re-entry programs for inmates and those returning to the general public after serving their sentences. The agency also assists its clients children and other loved ones.

In addition to coats, hats and gloves and other winter gear are needed.

Donated food will be used to assist in caring for shelter animals and for AniMeals, Humane Pennsylvania's pet food-bank program.

People can drop off donations at the two centers:

The Berks County shelter is at 1801 N. 11th St. in Reading. It will accept donations between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. today, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Donations will be accepted from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Friday and Monday.

The Lancaster County shelter at 2195 E. Lincoln Highway, Lancaster, will accept donations on any day from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
