ANDERSON, Ind. (WTHR) — An Anderson charity that helps people feed their pets is in need of help.
Ernie's heart Pet Food Pantry in Anderson may have to close soon. The organization helps people who have hit hard times feed their pets so they don't give them up.
The organization's owner told our news gathering partners at the Herald Bulletin they're struggling to keep the doors open.
"It’s not so much with the food, it’s the fact we still have to pay rent," Jan Smith said. "I spend a lot of time making connections for food, but we have gotten so big, we have to have a place to store it."
Smith said if the organization could raise about $1,000 each month, it would be in good shape. Its current location on 8th Street costs them about $400 for rent, and another $200 for utilities. Smith said the monthly cost to provide food assistance to about 800 is approximately $600.
Unlike typical food banks, the pet pantry doesn't typically see a resource boost around the holidays. Smith said if something isn't done soon, the pantry could close.
Some people who have benefited from the pantry in the past do give back once they're back on their feet, but it's not enough.
