Puppy Love - Auburn Journal

One in five Americans take their pet into consideration on Valentine’s Day according to a 2015 study by the National Retail Federation. For some, the day is a joyous day to celebrate all the love in their life, including their dog. For others, a dog can make a better date than a human. Either way, the love between owner and pet is special, so why not celebrate together? Here are a few stops to make for the big day.

Giving dogs chocolate is a bad idea, but that doesn’t mean owners can’t spoil their dog with with a treat. Scraps Dog Bakery in Grass Valley carries freshly baked, in-store cookies made with wholesome, organic ingredients.

“Don’t forget your furry pets,” co-owner Arnette McClure said. “They’ll want the Valentine’s hearts. It’s fun.”

In addition to the cranberry heart cookies, Scraps will have special paw cakes for Valentine’s Day.

“We always have paw cakes. We will frost them and have little hearts on them,” Co-owner Janice Hundermer said.

Scraps purchases all its ingredients from the local co-op and also offers wheat-free cookies for pets with allergies.

“It’s weird. They’re just like people,” Hundermer said.

Scraps opened 14 years ago by sisters Arnette McClure, Audrey Moore and Janice Hundemer who are interested in pet nutrition. In addition to being a dog bakery, Scraps carries pet supplies.

Giving flowers to a dog is also a bad idea, so how about a gift instead? Incredible Pets is a local, family-owned pet store with two locations in the foothills.

“I take my dogs on walks and play fetch,” Auburn store manager Patrick Webb said. “I’ll also get them new toys and maybe add a little something extra to their meal.”
iving flowers to a dog is also a bad idea, so how about a gift instead? Incredible Pets is a local, family-owned pet store with two locations in the foothills.

The pet store sells many toys including the popular Kong toys and the Chuckit. Another great gift is a new leash or name tag. Other gifts could include hiking booties, a safety booster car seat, a stroller or a carry bag for owners to take their pet along with them all day.

“People treat animals as if they were kids,” Webb said.

For a spa day, take your dog into the store and utilize one of the self-grooming stations.

A new grooming brush makes for a nice gift, too.

“My dogs go crazy if I pull it out,” he said.

In addition to pet toys and supplies, Incredible Pets also sells a variety of bones and treats in its blue bins.

On the day of love no one will love a human more unconditionally then man’s best friend.
